Lisa and I had an excellent vacation together in New Orleans recently. It was our first and it was sure memorable. Lisa won two Bram Stoker awards at the Horror Writer’s Association banquet. I met some amazing people and participated in a horror cinema panel with some very smart and funny people (cough…cough..Amber Benson). Lisa and I ate our way through New Orleans, which I think has some of the best food in the world.
I managed to visit four bookshops while I was there and, by far, Beckham’s Books was the best. Lisa and I bought so many books from dealers (cough..Centipede Press) that we had to mail them back in 3 boxes.
New Orleans is a wonderful town to visit. The Hotel Monteleone is one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed at (OMG, the shower, the shower!) and simply walking around the streets and amazing graveyards is a remarkable experience. The town has an ambience and history like no other. Of course, it was hot and humid as hell, but we were having so much fun it didn’t really bother us that much.
What will stand out in my memory (along with the food and being with Lisa) is a post-banquet cigar I had right across the street from the hotel on Saturday night. Dozens of cars and people came by and every one of the looked happy. I’ll never forget that moment.
If you ever get the chance to visit New Orleans, jump on it. I’ve visited 3 times in the last 10 years and every visit is better than the last.
